History

The history of autism can be traced from 1911. The word autism was coined by Eugen Bleuler, a psychiatrist from Switzerland.

About History of Autism:

Dr. Leo Kanner conducted intensive research on autism by analyzing the behavioral traits of the autistic children. Autism was regarded as schizophrenia till 1960. Autism is caused due to defect in the functioning of the brain.

The central nervous system is affected by autism. The symptoms of autism are visible from childhood. The children suffering from autism becomes a social recluse. They do not interact with other members of the family and the society. The autistic children create a world of their own . The autistic children also do not develop the power of logic.

They also tend to repeat a particular task . The autistic children also have very low intelligent quotient as compared to the normal children. The autistic children are not capable of remembering the things which they learn.

Some of the autistic children suffer from epileptic seizures. The autistic children also try to harm themselves and become violent.

Autism was previously treated as a psychiatric disorder. With the passage of time, a lot of institutes have come up that provide specialized training to the autistic children.

The autistic children are taught to differentiate between the acceptable social behavior and the non -acceptable behavior. A lot of techniques are taught to the autistic children to improve their intelligent quotient.

A lot of awareness is generated among the people so that they do not ostracize the autistic patients.
The society and the family should show empathy to the autistic patients.

The autistic patients are now encouraged to partake in the activities of the mainstream society.
Employment opportunities are also generated for the autistic patients so that they can perform their jobs like a normal person

A lot of medicines are also prescribed by the doctors for the treatment of autistic patients who show symptoms of violence, self injury and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Some of the antipsychotics, neuroleptics and antidepressants are given to the autistic patients . The drugs are, however, avoided in case of pediatric patients because of their side effects. The children are given the drugs only if they cause harm to themselves and are extremely violent.

The scientists are conducting research throughout the world to identify the link between the genetics and autism. The research can bring to light the genetic cause of autism.
Research is also conducted to develop new medicines for the treatment of autism .

The society,family and the educational institutes are instrumental in bringing the autistic persons to the mainstream society.
